KIUC Inches to 97% Restored While Work Continues

LĪHUʻE, KAUAʻI — Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) crews, supplemented by contractors and mutual aid partners, continued work today to restore remaining outages. Troubleshooters also addressed new outages not linked to Hurricane Lowell. As of this afternoon, 97% of KIUC members islandwide have been restored, with more than 500 additional members restored since the last update. 

Outage Restoration Update:

North Shore: Approximately 95% of the 5,500 members from Moloaa to Hanalei who were out of power immediately after the storm have been restored. Wainiha and Hā‘ena remain 0% restored, affecting approximately 500 members. Vegetation and debris clearing continues in Wainiha and Hā‘ena, and initial repair work is underway. Based on current conditions, the best estimate is that restoration could begin in Wainiha/Hā‘ena toward the end of this week.

There remain several pockets of outages between the communities of Anahola and Kekaha. The location of these outages, along with the number of members affected, can be viewed on KIUC’s Outage Map. Outage clusters and individual members will be brought back online as repairs are completed. Because conditions and the extent of repairs vary by location, specific restoration estimates are not yet available for each remaining outage.

Kōke‘e: Kōke‘e remains 0% restored, affecting approximately 110 members. Vegetation and debris clearing also continues in Kōke‘e, where a substantial amount of work remains before repairs and restorations can safely begin. KIUC currently anticipates repair work could get underway sometime this week. It is still too early to provide an estimated restoration timeline for Kōke‘e.

Traffic and Safety Reminders:

No highway lane closures are scheduled for Monday, September 21. Residents and visitors are reminded to drive with caution when passing utility work areas, and should not approach utility workers and/or enter their work area at any time. Note: KIUC has suspended collections activities for delinquent accounts. The timing of resumption of collections activities will be evaluated once Hurricane Lowell restoration is completed.
