Renewable Portfolio
KIUC is making significant progress toward its goal of using renewable resources to generate 100 percent of Kauai’s power by 2033. In 2024, KIUC reported using 51% renewable sources. Review KIUC's most current Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) report to the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission at the link below.
KIUC has an innovative use for the GE LM2500 Gas Turbine Generator: While in synchronous condenser mode, renewable energy from the grid keeps the turbine generator spinning, ensuring high reliability while operating the grid at 100% renewable energy on most sunny days without any fuel being consumed!
As a member-owned not-for-profit electric cooperative, KIUC is lighting the way with its renewable energy progress. KIUC's use of renewable energy benefits Kauai residents by stabilizing and keeping rates low, as well as being better for the environment. KHON2 News spoke with KIUC and AES Hawaiʻi leaders about how it all works in this episode of Empowered Hawaiʻi: Kauai Lights the Way.
